"From Our Eyes" an epic success
On March 22, 2010 over one hundred folks from the South Central and Skid Row community gathered together at Mercado La Paloma to celebrate community voices. It was an exhibit I organized with several goals in mind but the first was to honor community people on all levels for their efforts to make our communities a better place through several art mediums; photography, writing, film and drawing. A team of 3 writers (Fabiola Sandoval, Erin Coleman and myself) and 4 photographers (Fabiola Sandoval, Robert Vidana, Ed Schuman and Lauren Ahkiam) and several editors (among them Amy Halpern and Emery Desper) produced the "From Our Eyes" or "De Nuestros Ojos" wall. There were four more installations. Nick from LACAN produced a compilation of digital images and Jas Wade, an independent filmaker showed her documentary called Cultivating Roots: A Community's Story of Resistance. Additionally, the Skid Row Photography Club members created a Black and White photography exhibit. Finally, 2nd- 5th grade children took pictures in front of their drawings and captions which detailed their thoughts on South Central. The last piece of the event was a community award ceremony that honored the lives of 3 heros (Heidi, Maria and Joe) all making a difference in their community inspiring hope and love to those around them. Truly humbled for all the partnerships, friends I made along the way, and old friends that came together to create this masterpiece. Praise God to which all praise is due and from which all things come.
